Best iPhone 2023: Which Apple iPhone Should You Buy?

If you’re reading this, you’re likely going to buy an iPhone, or at least heavily leaning towards doing so. For one reason or another (and there are quite a few), you want one. Yet when you go online, you find that there are a bunch of models to choose from. There are 13 generations of iPhone and the SE line, and for some time, there have been variations on each of the main models to choose from on top of that.

Realistically you have to choose between this generation and the last, and then which sub-model you want among those. Yet that’s still quite a bit to choose from, and we want you to make the best choice.

Here’s what you need to know about the differences between models and some information on the best iPhone for you:

What Differences Can One Expect Between Models?

Usually, we would mention some factors that go into our decision-making when recommending phones, though the needs are slightly different in this case. You’re only going to pick from five or six models realistically, so you must fine-tune your requirements and think clearly about the differences.

The differences between lines (12, 13, etc.) will be greater than those between model types (mini, pro, pro max, etc.). New features and tech are usually added in those larger changeovers, and there might be something you miss if you go with an older model. The variations might add some extra screen real estate or power, but you’ll be functionally able to do the same things between them.

On top of that, when shopping online or in the store, there may be differences in the amount of storage space on the iPhone. We won’t differentiate much between these while discussing the phones, so be careful when you go shopping for your phone of choice so that you get your preference.

Notes on Current iPhones

While there is a clear winner in terms of the “best” iPhone regarding specs, screen size, and more, that isn’t the whole picture for smartphone users. Price comes into consideration, and people might want a smartphone of a different size. Some people might even like the generation of iPhone before the current one, given that they are more stable, the best model is perfected and available, and they likely still run well. They might also be more available, given the shortage of some tech items in recent years.

We’ll go over the main options and then add subsections for each of the sub-models that you can choose from:

Best iPhones of 2023

iPhone 13 Pro Max

If you want a simple answer to the question of what the best iPhone is as of this writing, then you have it. The iPhone Pro Max has everything that came before it and more.

From the “Max” label, you can imagine the phone is larger than its alternatives, and this is the case. Some people will like that and others might find it too big for their hands. It will be up to you and your preferences whether it’s the right size. However, it is overall the most advanced phone available from Apple, if by just a smidge over the iPhone 13 Pro.

Naturally, with all the above, it can do anything you would hope a smartphone can do and run any app in the world designed for an iPhone unless the app is old and fails to update correctly. You’ll get the power you need, an amazing camera setup, and an amazing display.

Major Features and Notes on the iPhone 13 Pro Max

  • The iPhone 13 Pro Max uses an A15 Bionic processor, which performs magnificently in nearly all situations and, combined with the screen, provides a fantastic gaming or entertainment experience. Internal storage space options include 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, though we recommend getting at least 256GB of internal storage to make the most of the phone. Without going too much into the details, this is one of the fastest phones in the world and can do things perhaps no other phone has done before. It beat out practically all the Android competition at release and remains a profoundly competitive phone as of this writing.
  • As for the display, it uses a 6.7-inch ProMotion display, which can dynamically scale the refresh rate on the phone from 10Hz to 120Hz. While there were some glitches and problems with apps early on with this feature, by this point, the problem has been well-addressed via an update. It reaches just about 1,000 nits of brightness (the brightest iPhone on this list) and has a resolution of 2778 x 1284p. Simply put, this is the best screen on an iPhone, and you will notice that quickly.
  • Note also that being such a large device with so much packed in it, it’s a pretty heavy one as far as smartphones go, weighing 8.5 ounces and weighing more once you put a case on there (highly recommended, durable as the phone is). You might like the weight or still prefer something smaller, which we’ll address shortly.
  • The camera setup is naturally the best that’s ever been on an iPhone, and given the software Apple includes, it can be a contender for the best camera that’s ever been on a phone, extreme specialist phones notwithstanding. It uses a triple rear camera setup with a Pro 12MP camera with Telephoto, Wide, and Ultra-Wide lenses. There is 3x optical zoom and a 15x digital zoom. The front camera is a 12MP TrueDepth camera. You can expect pictures, in general, to showcase lots of detail and have brilliant colors.
  • Battery life will be roughly 12 hours, depending on settings and usage habits, which is perfectly fine for a flagship phone. However, charging time leaves a bit to be desired compared to most other phones in its price range.
  • As of this writing, the iPhone 13 Pro Max generally costs $1100, which is a great value for what is on offer here.

We recommend the iPhone 13 Pro Max if:

  • You want the absolute best iPhone you can buy as of this writing and are unwilling to compromise on that for a moment.
  • You would like a larger flagship phone with amazing all-around features for a reasonable price.
  • You are looking to upgrade from your current iPhone and are interested in the new features and improvements that the iPhone 13 Pro Max offers. However, we would not recommend upgrading from an iPhone 13 variant to a Pro Max. The differences are not worth it with the 14 on the way.

Variations and Other Versions of the iPhone 13

The iPhone 13 Pro Max sounds great, but that isn’t the only iPhone 13 in the store. What about the other options? Let’s review some key differences you should know about with each model.

iPhone 13 (Base)

The base iPhone 13 is quite an achievement in terms of hardware and improvements and remains a solid option for many people. However, the iPhone 13 base model only has two cameras on the rear, has a display rate of up to 60Hz instead of 120Hz, and has less battery life. Additionally, internal storage options are generally lower, and performance will be slightly slower while using the same chipset (the Pro and Pro Max have one more core). Finally, as expected, the base model is smaller than the Max Pro. Yet given that the iPhone 13 base model is about $300 cheaper, you must ask if those tradeoffs are worth it.

iPhone 13 Pro

Much like the 12 Pro before, the iPhone 13 has a regular Pro version that is a bit smaller than the Pro Max but nonetheless has most of the excellent hardware and features that make the Pro Max one of the best currently available phones. The technical aspects are practically the same, though the display on the Pro is slightly smaller (6.1” vs. 6.7” for the Max Pro), and the resolution is necessarily slightly lower. However, the difference is hardly noticeable, given the screen size. The Pro also costs about $100 less than the Max Pro.

iPhone 13 Mini

There are people with smaller hands or smaller pockets that prefer smaller phones. This might be the iPhone for them. It is much smaller than the Pro Max, having a screen size of about 5.4”. Otherwise, it generally has the exact specifications as the base iPhone 13, though it has a slightly shorter battery life. It is also slightly cheaper than the base iPhone 13, starting at about $700. It’s effectively made for people who want a smaller phone.

The Previous Generation

Now that we’ve gone over the current generation let’s talk about the iPhone 12 and whether it might be the best choice for you. As with the iPhone 13 line, there are several options, but the Pro Max version is the best.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

Before the iPhone 13 came about, the iPhone 12 Max reigned supreme, with good reason. It has (and still has) a fantastic screen and lots of processing power under the hood and could compete with any other flagship you could name. It continued to have all the strengths that iPhones were known for, if with a few annoyances outside of the box.

And while the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the new king, at least for the moment, the iPhone 12 Pro Max can still be the best option for many readers. If you want a great phone at a price that is much more affordable, keep on reading the details below:

Major Features and Notes on the iPhone 12 Pro Max

  • The display is a 6.7 screen that has a 2778 x 1284p resolution. Unfortunately, the display doesn’t reach a 120Hz refresh rate, which some might consider a significant disadvantage. Though if you aren’t a gamer, you probably won’t miss it too much. Note that the size is large, which is by design, which also makes it a slightly heavy phone at a little over eight ounces (more once you get a case). This will be a pro to some people and a con to others.
  • The camera array consists of a 12MP wide camera, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens. Zoom options include a 2.5x optical zoom and a 12x digital zoom. The front camera is a 12MP TrueDepth camera. And like most iPhones, the numbers don’t seem too impressive compared to the flagship Android phones, but the software makes up for it. The iPhone line provides some of the best photography and videography you can get on a smartphone. The iPhone 12 lineup is no exception.
  • Performance-wise, the phone uses an A14 chipset, an extremely fast chip for its time, and remains so to this day. It doesn’t quite compete with the current A15 set, but it will be more than enough for anything you want to put it through.
  • The battery life is expected to be about 10.5 hours of regular use, with some variance based on your settings and what you are doing on your iPhone. This is a great for a phone with this screen size and iPhones in general. Note, however, that at least at the time of release, the charger was sold separately, which was a major annoyance for consumers and reviewers alike.
  • The iPhone 12 Pro Max (and all iPhone 12 models) have 5G compatibility, one of the current concerns about getting an older phone.
  • The current price of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is about $700-800, depending on the retailer. However, given that it is a slightly older phone (if not terribly old just yet), the price is bound to go down dramatically in the future as clearance sales go on and retailers want to make room for newer models. This brings about the double-edged sword of lower prices combined with limited availability.

We recommend the iPhone 12 Pro Max if:

  • It is available for a fair price in your area or online. Note that finding new ones might not be accessible depending on when you are reading this.
  • You want an overall excellent Apple smartphone but do not need to get the newest model and upgrade each year.
  • You are looking for a larger phone with good performance, but you are also not looking for the most expensive iPhone or a huge flagship with more power than you need at this point in time.

iPhone 12 Variations

While the iPhone 12 Pro Max should be relatively affordable and is the best choice among the iPhone 12 line for most people, perhaps it isn’t for you. Here are some general notes about the other iPhone 12 models. We will not include price information as it varies widely and changes often.

iPhone 12 (Base)

The base iPhone 12 is still an impressive phone today, and many people recommend it as a good option compared to the budget models still being released today. Compared to the Pro Max, the iPhone 12 base model has lower internal storage options, no telephoto lens, a slightly shorter battery life, and is smaller. It is also generally cheaper than the Pro Max, so you must balance those considerations for yourself.

iPhone 12 Pro

The iPhone 12 Pro is effectively the pro max, but with a smaller screen. The Pro Max also has a slightly better camera than the Pro, allowing for better zooming and a larger main wide camera sensor. The differences are primarily minimal except for photo enthusiasts, however. We’re partial to larger screens for ease of use and entertainment purposes, but the iPhone 12 Pro is the way to go if you have different preferences.

iPhone 12 Mini

As can be expected from the name, the iPhone 12 Mini is an iPhone 12, just smaller with a smaller screen. It has a slightly shorter battery life, a slightly lower resolution (but the difference is hardly noticeable), is naturally lighter, and doesn’t perform much differently, if at all. It is a fine choice if you’re looking for a last-generation iPhone that is as small as possible and might be just a little cheaper.

The iPhone SE Line

On top of the 12, 13, and likely soon to come 14 line, there is also the SE line that Apple has released as a budget-friendly option compared to the major options. For people who are turned off of Apple due to the high price of the phones, the SE line might be the best option. Currently, the third-generation model (also known as iPhone SE 2022) is the one you’ll find in stores, so let’s go over the details below.

Major features and notes on the iPhone SE 3:

  • The iPhone SE 3 uses an A15 Bionic chipset. It is the same as the iPhone 13, so it boasts impressive gaming and general use performance.
  • It has a 4.7-inch LCD screen that has a 1344 x 750p screen. This doesn’t make for the best video or image quality, though you will be able to read what you need. Color quality is fine, as is brightness, but the bezels are noticeable, and you won’t be getting a full HD picture. It certainly doesn’t compete with the screen in either the iPhone 12 Pro Max or the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
  • In general, it is a compact device, weight a tiny bit over five ounces and measuring slightly under 5.5 inches on its longest side. People with large hands probably won’t be fans, but some prefer smaller devices and may not want an iPhone 13 mini.
  • Storage options include 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Given modern use cases, we recommend at least 128GB of storage.
  • It has a 12MP rear camera and a 7MP front camera. The numbers don’t sound impressive, but the cameras in iPhones are often about the software. Still, there are much better camera options both inside and outside of the Apple family of products. You also do not have the zooming options that you might get used to with other phones.
  • The battery should last about nine hours, depending on your usage habits, which is somewhat low for modern times. However, it does have a relatively fast recharge time with the right gear.
  • As of this writing, the starting price of the iPhone SE 3 is about $429. If you are looking for a good deal or can get a discount with a plan, you can likely get it much cheaper.

We recommend the iPhone SE 3 if:

  • You want an iPhone but cannot justify the expense of the latest or even second-latest model.
  • You are looking for a basic phone for basic tasks yet are used to the unique and, too many people, better UI that Apple provides.
  • You want an affordable iPhone for someone in your life and know they don’t need the absolute best.

Try Not to Get Overwhelmed

All the above might get a little overwhelming, and you might think there is more to differentiate the models than there is. Many of the differences are related to the size of the phone and a few design differences. Often the hardware, which matters most to most people, is the same. While the Pro and Pro Max models have hardware improvements, they aren’t so huge as to constitute a different product. Remember that you effectively choose between three options and then make a few minor decisions.

Getting a Used or Refurbished iPhone

Apple products are in an exciting space in the used product market. While they are likely to be okay, there is always an (often justified) stigma against used or refurbished products of any sort. After all, someone first got rid of them or traded them in for a reason, right? Your personal situation will vary, and as such, only you can decide whether one of these products is the right choice. However, here are some notes and thoughts that can help you decide:

  • Getting a used product from the Apple store with the appropriate warrantees and guarantees is much better than getting it from a relatively unknown online dealer. Being able to bring your phone into the store is reassuring, and you know exactly what to do if there is a problem. You might not get as much discount, but the peace of mind is worth it.
  • When you get a used or refurbished product, please test it out as much as you can as early as you can. If you cannot do so before purchase (perhaps you bought it online), you might benefit from inspecting the product thoroughly and taking pictures of it to look for scratches or damage.
  • Make sure that the seller is being honest about the condition. If you aren’t getting it directly from Apple, look for good reviews about the seller and their return processes.
  • Note that while the phone can work well for years after you get it, the lifespan simply will not be what it would be if you got a new phone, and the performance will not be able to compete with relatively new phones. You need to consider this when comparing the value of potential phones and decide on a device accordingly.

Always be on the Lookout for New Models

On top of the above, by the time you read this, a new line of iPhones may have been announced and even released. While we will update this article appropriately as we are able, you should try to be aware of the latest releases and do a quick check before you dive into your current choice. We promise it won’t take much looking if there’s a new iPhone on the way.

However, note that it can feel like there is a new model always on the way, and that will be the case until either the end of time or Apple, for some reason, stops making iPhones (whichever comes first). Don’t delay getting a new phone just in the hope that something will be around the corner and ensure that you have a smartphone that is so needed in today’s world.

Conclusion

If you’re set on an iPhone, most of the work of picking a model has been done for you, but not all. We hope that this article has helped narrow things down for you and that you will be able to pick out the perfect phone for yourself or someone close to you. There are hundreds of millions of happy iPhone owners already, and you can be one of them with the right choice.
